How This Metal Roof Cost Calculator Works

Enter the building's length and width, the roof pitch, the metal and the panel style. The calculator:

  1. Finds the real roof area. A sloped roof has more surface than the floor it covers. The calculator multiplies length × width by a pitch factor: √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²). A 6:12 roof has a factor of 1.118, so a 40 × 30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) becomes 1,342 sq ft of roof.
  2. Prices the metal. Material cost = roof area × the panel price for the style (galvanized steel) × a factor for the metal, plus the waste % you enter (10% by default, for cuts, overlaps and trim). The result shows the waste % used.
  3. Prices the labor. Labor cost = roof area × the labor rate for the panel style. Standing seam takes longest to install, so it has the highest labor rate.
  4. Adds them up for a total installed estimate.

Rates Used in This Calculator

Panel styleGalvanized steel materialLaborInstalled (galvanized)
Corrugated$3.00$4.00$7.00
Ribbed (exposed fastener)$3.00$4.00$7.00
Metal shingle$4.50$5.50$10.00
Standing seam$5.50$7.00$12.50

Metal factors (applied to material): galvanized steel 1.0, aluminum 1.5, stainless steel 2.15, copper 3.3. For example, a copper standing seam roof uses $5.50 × 3.3 = $18.15 per sq ft for material plus $7.00 labor, about $25 per sq ft installed before waste. The table shows rates before the waste allowance, which the calculator adds to the material line.

Source: rates are set to fall inside the ranges in HomeGuide's metal roof cost guide (2026): installed $5 to $12 per sq ft for corrugated, $9 to $16 for standing seam and $6 to $14 for metal shingles; labor $4 to $8 per sq ft; installed per square (100 sq ft) $700 to $1,700 for aluminum, $1,000 to $2,100 for stainless steel and $1,300 to $3,000 for copper. Local prices vary; get several quotes.

Measure the footprint including the eave and gable overhangs, not just the walls. You can enter pitch in degrees or as a ratio (enter 6 for a 6:12 roof).

What it doesn't include: tear-off of the old roof, new decking, flashing around chimneys and skylights, permits and delivery. Those can add 10-30% (see "Why is my contractor's quote higher than the calculator?" below).

How Much Does a Metal Roof Cost in 2026?

Installed prices, materials and labor together, United States:

TypeInstalled cost per sq ftPer square (100 sq ft)
Corrugated / exposed-fastener steel$5-$12$500-$1,200
Metal shingles$6-$14$600-$1,400
Standing seam$9-$16$900-$1,600
Aluminum$7-$17$700-$1,700
Stainless steel / zinc$10-$21$1,000-$2,100
Copper$13-$30$1,300-$3,000

Labor alone is typically $4-$8 per sq ft. A 1,500 sq ft roof runs about $7,500-$24,000, a 2,000 sq ft roof $10,000-$32,000.

Steel prices moved in 2025-2026 because of tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, so get current quotes.

Canada (CAD, installed): $13-$30 per sq ft overall. Exposed-fastener galvanized steel $13-$18, standing seam steel $18-$25, aluminum $22-$30, copper or zinc $35 and up.

What Goes Into a Metal Roof (Materials List)

  • Panels. Ordered by the square or by the linear foot, cut to length. Exposed-fastener panels typically cover about 36 in. of width each; standing seam panels 12-18 in. Number of panels per side ≈ roof length ÷ panel coverage width, rounded up.
  • Trim. Ridge cap (length of the ridge), eave/drip trim (length of the eaves), rake/gable trim (sloped edges), valley flashing, plus flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights.
  • Fasteners. Exposed-fastener roofs use gasketed screws, often around 70-80 per square; follow the panel maker's fastening schedule, which depends on wind zone. Standing seam uses hidden clips.
  • Underlayment. Synthetic underlayment under the panels (high-temperature types under dark metal).
  • Closures and sealant at the ridge and eaves for ribbed and corrugated profiles.

Waste allowance: a simple gable roof with panels cut to length needs about 5-10% extra; hips, valleys and dormers need 10-15% because of angled cuts. The calculator adds 10% to the material line by default; change the Waste field to match your roof.

Weight: steel roofing weighs about 0.7-1.5 lb per sq ft (70-150 lb per square), far less than asphalt shingles or tile. Source: Metal Roofing Alliance via Hunker, "Metal Roof 26 vs. 29 Gauge".

Metal Roof Cost FAQs

How much does a metal roof cost per square foot?
Installed, most US metal roofs cost $5-$16 per sq ft: $5-$12 for corrugated steel, $9-$16 for standing seam. Copper runs $13-$30. Multiply by your roof area, not your floor area: a 6:12 roof has about 12% more surface than its footprint.
How much does a metal roof cost in Canada?
In 2026 Canadian dollars, expect $13-$30 per sq ft installed: about $13-$18 for exposed-fastener steel and $18-$25 for standing seam. The calculator accepts metric measurements, but its prices are US dollars at US rates, so use the Canadian ranges above for budgeting.
How much does a standing seam metal roof cost?
$9-$16 per sq ft installed in the US ($18-$25 CAD in Canada). It costs more than exposed-fastener panels mainly because of labor: seams are formed on site and clipped to the deck without exposed screws.
How do I estimate metal roofing materials?
Work out the roof area (footprint × pitch factor), divide by 100 for squares, and add 5-15% waste (the calculator adds 10% by default; you can change it). Then list panels by side (roof length ÷ panel coverage width), trim by the linear foot (ridge, eaves, rakes, valleys), screws or clips per square, and underlayment rolls.
Is a tin roof the same as a steel roof?
Almost always, yes. "Tin roof" is a common name for galvanized or Galvalume steel panels; true tin roofing is rare today. Use "Galvanized Steel" in the calculator.
How do I measure my roof for a metal roof estimate?
Measure the building's length and width including the overhangs, and find the pitch (inches of rise per 12 in. of run). Enter both; the calculator converts the footprint to true roof area. For complex roofs, add up each section separately.
Why is my contractor's quote higher than the calculator?
The calculator covers panels and installation on a clean deck. Quotes also include tear-off and disposal, deck repairs, trim and flashing, underlayment, permits, and access (steep or tall roofs cost more to work on). Regional labor rates and steel prices also vary.
Is a metal roof worth the cost compared with shingles?
A metal roof costs roughly 1.5-3 times as much as asphalt shingles up front (shingles: about $3-$6 per sq ft installed, HomeGuide), but it typically lasts 40-70 years against 15-30, needs less maintenance and is much lighter.
